Literacy Programs encompassing Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening are implemented in one-hour blocks, in classrooms across the school.  The Early Years Literacy Program was introduced into the school in 1998.  It is an initiative of the Department of Education, Employment and Training.

Where necessary the program has been adapted and modified to improve learning outcomes for each student. Staff are trained in the most effective strategies and approaches for developing literacy skills.  It is a focused teaching approach that includes ongoing assessment and monitoring to ensure that each child is taught at his/ her point of need.  Therapists and Specialist staff support the classroom teacher to meet the goals of each student.

With the use of Information and Communication Technology the school is able to create their own computer programs and school generated texts to include symbols, photos and text relevant to student needs.  Assistive technology allows non-verbal students and those with physical impairments to interact in the literacy environment.

The school values the participation of parents and classroom helpers and provides training for these groups to enable them to develop ways of working together with the classroom staff to support literacy learning.
