Theme - The
Circus
Rationale "The Circus" has been selected as the focus of
this term's integrated units of work. The theme will cover a range of learning
experiences across the Key Learning Area's, but mainly encompass the performing
arts and movement skills.
Main Focus The central activity of this theme will be preparing,
practicing and performing a Circus for an audience (parents). The focus will be on the main characters and animals seen
in a circus, with separate units on Performers, Animals and Clowns. Theme Over-view The theme will run for a term. Units of work may be
undertaken in 3 week blocks as outlined and include curriculum focus points and
learning outcomes based on the Victorian Curriculum and Standards Framework
Level 1, and skills from Barwon Valley Draft Curriculum Documents. The major Key Learning Areas covered are The Arts, and
Health & Physical Education. Circus based learning tasks will be undertaken
in English, Maths and Technology, while Studies of Society and the Environment,
and Science learning outcomes will be included in an integrated curriculum
approach with projects undertaken
by individuals and as a group. Different activities within the units will be selected
according to the needs of each class group, and each student will work on

Unit Over-view
Circus
Performers Focus - This
unit will focus on the main characters, the types of acts and where performances
are held. Main Activities - prepare props and practice Circus acts
for audience

Focus Content- This unit will focus on the main characters and the types
of acts that they do, with the object being to develop similar skills in
students - Ring master - announcing
(speaking to group, appropriate volume) Clown - play skills, emotions (yoyo etc, happy/sad) Lion tamer - instruct lions to do tricks (following, giving
instructions) Acrobat - tumbling, balance skills (movement
skills) Trapeze artist - swinging (upper body strength) Magician - tricks (performing
to group) Juggler - co-ordination Tight rope walker - balance
(balance, heel-toe walking) Bare back rider - balance (balance on/off ground) Audience - appropriate behaviours (sitting watching
quietly, clapping etc)
